St Francis Bay Thatch Farm
This project was initiated when a post graduate student of Prof Richard Cowling conducted a feasibility study to start a "thatch farm" on the land between the refuse tip and St Francis Drive. The St Francis Kromme Trust contributed over R6000 to cover the costs of this feasibility study and report. The project was taken up by the "Working for Water" programme and the Gamtoos Irrigation Board administers the project for them. The idea is to give training to a group of persons in bush clearing, chain saw operation, administration, personal finance and safety amongst others. The group tenders to clear a number of "blocks" and when this is done, they can go and work in the open market with the knowledge they have gained. After this a new group then goes through the same training which equips them to find work later on. Only locals are employed and trained in the programme. One crop of thatch has been harvested and sold thus far. |
